Real Otaku Heroes

World of Eternity

Grant Goodmorrow

June 27, 2004 / bogey

I found out that two of the links on the "Songs" page of Real Otaku Heroes weren't working, so I fixed them (I forgot to upload the files after changning the links) - why don't people tell me these things?! Chou mukatsuku! You'd think one of the 20 people who actually liked the songs they could download would've wanted to hear all of them...

I also found a site with some nice pictures. Of course, while there are nice pictures lurking around the net, there are also odd pictures. Sure it's a bit odd, but it's fun trying to ID all of the characters since it only takes a few characteristics; interestingly enough, it would be difficult to ID many characters in anime and games without these characteristics. Animators have long since realized this, but I'm a bit slow at noticing things.

Go take a look at my newest rant for further proof; I'm sure those who know me don't need any such proof...

Finally, I bring to you, fresh off the presses, the Pic of the Week.

June 23, 2004 / gaud

For those of you who haven't noticed, there's a new update out for Melty Blood Re•ACT - look for a file called 0623.lzh. I still haven't installed the last one yet...

Also, I put a small poster up on Real Otaku Heroes for those of you who don't go there that often; I don't blame you - there isn't much there ^_^;

I also added some more lurking relatives to my Spatulas in Anime page.

June 20, 2004 / esoteric

One of the cool things about Galaxy Angel is the sheer number of in-jokes that the creators use. For example, in Season 3, Episodes 37-38, Vanilla H is playing a love simulation game aimed at girls, and a number of options appear on the screen at one point asking what hobbies she likes. She then inputs the following: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, B.

uuddlrlrbab    Secret Option

After doing this, an extra option (the praying icon) appears under the normal choices. I wonder how many younger viewers understood this joke. After so many years, it's impressive that people still remember this. All hail Konami...

This week, I use the Pic of the Week to remind you that The Spatula and Sklathill will be at Anime Expo. If you think you're any good at Queen of Heart '99, Party's Breaker, Melty Blood, or Melty Blood Re•ACT, now's your chance to show off your 1337 sKi11z. If you don't know what I'm talking about, check out the Games section.

June 17, 2004 / smackdown

As I was playing more Melty Blood Re•ACT, I noticed that one of Hisui's attacks involves a spatula (her right hand). Obviously, this means that Hisui is a very powerful character. ^_^ She has to be to tangle with vampires, demons, and familiars - oh my! I was also reminded me of the fact that Hatsune uses two spatulas, in one of her attacks, and we all know how devastating her attacks can be...

Hisui + Spatula = Win Hatsune's Dual Spatulas

As long as we're on the subject of Melty Blood Re•ACT, there's a new update out - look for a file called 0615.lzh. I'm waiting to see what people think of it before I install it on my system. I also came across a mirror for patches for all of the Watanabe Seisakujo games that I mention in the Games section.

Also, I mentioned before (June 13) that there was a segment about Robotech on the Conan O'Brien show. Apparently, there is an article on Robotech.com mentioning this segment. They are also kind enough to have a copy of the segment on their site. What are you waiting for? Go there!

June 15, 2004 / alabaster

When I was watching Koi Kaze, I thought something was a bit odd about the character design, but I couldn't put my finger on it.

Koi Kaze    Koi Kaze

Later, I realized that it's because the inside of their mouths are white. Sure it's a trivial detail, but it felt like a splinter in my mind; I suppose it's due to my obsessive nature. I'm sure that there are other instances where this is the case, but I can' seem to think of any. I don't even know why I suddenly noticed something like this. Watching too much anime has probably taken its toll on my mind.

I'm sure that finding another spatula just adds to that theory...

June 13, 2004 / rage

On Late Night with Conan O'Brian, there's a segment called Pierre Bernard's Recliner of Rage, where a "member" of the staff by the same name, sits in a recliner and supposedly verbalizes the latent anger of Americans everywhere. Of course, it's usually about trivial things like iPod accessories or getting rid of a lame character from Stargate: SG-1; however, on Saturday, June 12th (~1am), he described how he was collecting a "Japanese Anime" called Robotech in VHS format, and he never got to finish collecting it because they stopped making it. Although it was re-released more recently, there are several titles that bear the name Robotech and Macross and that he was confused at the various collections out there; he didn't want to waste his time and money buying sets that weren't related to the original story. "Bottom line, America. There should be one definitive collection so I can find out what happened to that town in the bubble." (It's not an exact quote; I wish I had a PVR to record it).

Curious...

Anyway, I installed the update for Melty Blood Re•ACT, and I tested the replay I made with Version 2.000 using Version 2.001. The first round is mostly intact, but it gets stuck in the second round (many of the attacks aren't reproduced exactly, either); so if you're using Version 2.001, it seems like the bug would still work.

Yeah, I talk too much; go look at the Pic of the Week.

June 10, 2004 / acquired

I've got signal! Yes, I have an actual copy of Melty Blood Re•ACT. Now my collection is complete - I have authentic CDs for QoH '99, Party's Breaker, Melty Blood, and Melty Blood Re•ACT.

After a bit of playing, Zefi and I found an error when playing Version 2.000. I was using Arcueid and Zefi was using Len. We both did our 41236+C attacks while in Blood Heat Mode simultaneously; Arc was unscathed, but Len was stuck in the air as you can see below.

Arc vs Len Bug

Fortunately, I remembered that it's easy enough to save replays, so I saved a replay of the match. Keep in mind that it's for a totally clean install of Version 2.000, so I don't know if they fixed it yet. Also, if you do get to watch it, just watch the first round, since the other rounds are us sucking it up (we only played it a couple hours). I did see that there's a new patch that's up, but I still need to sift through the Melty Blood message board on GameFAQs to see if it's worth it.

In other news, there's a website where someone's collected translated versions of the several of the comics featuring the OS Girls. Useful for those of you who miss the postings of them on 4chan.

Finally, I discovered another spatula lurking in the depths of recent anime.

June 8, 2004 / peligro

I finally finished moving everything, so if you notice anything is broken, please let me know!

In the meantime, I was pondering another difference in American and Japanese culture.

Tristia of the Deep Blue Sea    Galaxy Angel TV: Season 3

Instead of an anvil or a potted plant, the most common falling object in anime seems to be a large washpan. I wonder why they use this particular object. I suppose it's rather ridiculous for such a thing to randomly fall on a person's head, but this could be true of many household objects. I think it might be because a large washpan can create a particular type of noise (like using a halisen), and it isn't fatal if one does fall on your head (American cartoon characters tend to be more durable). Of course, it could be common to toss around large washpans in Japan, hoping it lands on someone's head, thus creating laughs for all...

But enough of my strange rambling, go check out some Melty Blood Re•ACT match videos. They average around 20MB and are in .wmv format. On a related note, a fellow named "kalcaine" has been rather busy working on a faq/guide for Melty Blood Re•ACT.

June 6, 2004 / shuffle

I'm moving things around a bit soon, so if you linked to certain pages within this site it is likely you'll get errors when I complete moving everything. I assure you everything still exists; you just need to update links. My original arrangement was a bit haphazard so it's taken me forever to change all of my 150+ pages. Quite the headache.

I apologize in advance to those 6 people (my estimate) this will affect...

I suppose you'll be wanting a new Pic of the Week.

June 1, 2004 / react

Melty Blood Re•ACT is out for those of you who don't know; everyone else is busy whoring it from torrents. Fortunately, a friend of mine in Japan said he picked up a copy for me; unless he doesn't make it back to America, I'll be enjoying new fighting action in about a week. Soon it shall be mine... In the meantime, I'll study the excellent guide here so I can start the beatdown as soon as it arrives.

In other news, a mysterious reader (thank you) sent in some corrections to several of the character pages in my Queen of Heart '99 Guide. The Aoi, Ruriko, and Hatsune pages were mostly affected. I'm glad to see people are reading that section...

Finally, I was at Anime Jungle the other day, and I saw a huge figure of Raquel from Scrapped Princess (1/5th scale!). I'm too poor to afford it right now; hopefully, it'll still be around when I can...

Raquel-nee... ;_;
