Yep, you guessed it; another Pic of the Week is up.

I went to the kickoff of a 10-week lecture series over at UCLA related to anime and manga. It would be interesting to take some of those classes, but I already know everything there is to know about anime and manga ^_^

A funny highlight of the 3 hour presentation was the part where Shimizu Shinji presented a list of reasons why the manga/anime One Piece was popular. There were three in particular which strained the use of the English language:

  • It is a regular siege that takes place in a world of adventure & pirates full of adventure-like elements
  • Attractive Characters
  • The charm of analog

Now, I like One Piece, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that the characters are attractive. Also, I am pretty sure they meant to say "The charming dialogue" for the last one I listed. If they did mean "analog," then I apologize, and I will be sure to get out my LDs for the comeback of analog.

After that, we stopped by Gamers located near Pico and the 405. As I walked around, it seemed as if one of the girls working there was following me. Typically, girls avoid me, so it struck me as sort of odd. After a minute of pondering, I realized that they were simply making sure that I wasn't going to partake in any five-finger discounts. I didn't take it personally since I probably do look like a criminal. They looked pretty serious about it so I thought I'd spice up their lives a little bit by purposely moving to parts of the store where they couldn't see me. I played a sort of twisted version of hide-and-seek, ducking behind bookshelves, ducking down in the aisle, making brief eye contact like I had something to hide. I think I got two of them cautiously eyeing me for any suspicious activities.

Yeah, yeah, I know I'm evil. I don't have to worry though, since nobody really reads this site anyway...

All of the hoopla about the California Recall is really starting to irritate me, but that doesn't mean that I won't turn out to vote. It would be irresponsible to not vote. I haven't decided who I want to be governor - I need to do a bit more research first. I don't want to vote for someone simply because everyone else is...

In other news, I am really looking forward to watching Kill Bill. Pulp Fiction is a favorite of mine, and this newest effort by Tarantino looks more promising than his other works. Another movie that I would like to see is Lost in Translation. From what I can tell, I feel like I can identify with the main characters. Also, Millenium Actress looks pretty good.

Oh yeah, I noticed that the opening/ending animation for Uchuu no Stellvia and Read or Die TV are just clips from the show itself. There are probably other examples out there, but these are the most recent ones that come to mind. I suppose they spent all of their budget on the show itself and had to cut costs somewhere. It still feels kinda lame, like the Photoshopped job they did on the opening for Vandread: 2nd Stage.

Again, a new Pic of the Week is up.

I watched The Underworld the other day, and it was pretty decent, but I never really felt like I was watching a Vampire or Werewolf movie. It felt a little too cold and... sterile. This was probably a consequence of so many guns and technology and mostly monochromatic cinematography. It was more of a summmer-type action flick that relied a little too much on the special effects and shooting instead of trying to engage the audience with a good plot or story. While this isn't such a bad thing for an action flick, in the case of The Underworld, one starts to wonder why you would even need Vampires or Werewolves in the first place.

Maybe the whole point of the movie is that creatures of the dark are simply no match for the true horrors of the technology of modern man.

Or, maybe not...

Help me celebrate an inane 1 year anniversary - The Prize is in the Mail.

The usual Pic of the Week is up. Not much else going on recently, except that I'm looking forward to watching The Underworld (opens September 19, 2003). From what I can tell of the preview, it's a mix between Blade and Romeo & Juliet featuring vampires and werewolves.

I made an interesting discovery today - never save pad-thai for the next day. If you don't eat it within 12 hours, it becomes a hard mass of starchy evil. This has to do with the noodles drying out, which can typically be prevented by dropping it into a vacuum sealed bag. Unfortunately, I don't even have Ziploc bags...

Added a new Pic of the Week.

I finally finished doing the ratings for Seen All, although, I did do them rather quickly so I might change them after thinking it over some more. I would rather put comments in for each title, but that would take forever, so I'll just stick with the quick ratings for now.
